"You ate sand?"

f
HELP! Sal's been doing this thing that drives me crazy. She finds stuff on the ground like old food (not that I would ever leave old food on the floor...) or little rocks or sand or moss, then she looks at me, then she sticks it in her mouth and smiles with her teeth. I think she likes the reaction she gets... "Sal! Don't eat that!", then she bites me when I try to get the said rock or bark or week old piece of smushed grape out of her mouth. At the beach she kept eating handfuls of sand and then she'd smile at me while crunching the sand between her teeth. I try to ignore her unless I think whatever she's eating is dangerous (like mysterious trash or cigarette butts or poop from the bathtub... but that's a story for another day) but she keeps doing it. In fact, it seems to happen more every day. And here's the other thing... she'll eat acorns and paper, but she refused to even try meat or vegetables. Am I a horrible mother?

i love her. i'm so glad i'm not the only one that gets stumped by her kid.
kids are weird. i wonder why she won't eat veggies but will eat sand. there's got to be some way to switch things around. good luck.

Maybe you could try to force her to eat sand and then freak out and say "No Sal, don't eat those carrots!". Little kids always fall for reverse phycology.
